The Big 12’s best are meeting in the Cotton Bowl as the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners face off in the Red River Showdown.

It’s no surprise that two of the best teams in the country are meeting up in Dallas when the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns face off on Saturday. Oklahoma, a season ago, competed in the College Football Playoffs and captivated audiences with a remarkable offense that challenged even Alabama’s defense. Texas appeared to be “back” after knocking Georgia around in the Sugar Bowl and splitting its meetings with Oklahoma last year.

The Sooners and the Longhorns faced each other twice last season, with Texas winning the regular season matchup and Oklahoma claiming victory the Big 12 title game. This rivalry helped define the 2018 college football season. It will likely do that again this year.

The No. 6 Sooners will have an opportunity to place themselves right in the midst of the College Football Playoffs discussion with a win. No. 11 Texas, meanwhile, has a chance to create chaos within that same discussion if the Longhorns prevail on Saturday. It’s fair to say that this game will have a measurable impact on this season.

Prediction

While these two teams boast two of the best offenses in all of college football, Oklahoma’s is still notably more productive than the Longhorns’. The Sooners, right now, are scoring 53.4 points per game (2nd most in the country) and are gaining 644.2 yards per game (the most in the country). Texas is currently averaging 41.8 points per game (good for 11th nationwide) and 485.2 yards per game (18th overall).

To add on to that, OU truly appears to have a solid defense this season as well. Texas doesn’t quite have that luxury this season. When it comes to yards allowed, Oklahoma is giving up 348.2 yards per game (48th in the country) while Texas gives up 441.8 (104th).

This should be a high-scoring affair, but the differences in the quality of defense between these two teams will likely be what determines the outcome of this game. Expect OU to have no issue scoring throughout the contest while the Longhorns will face some difficulties at times.

Score: Oklahoma 52, Texas 38
