Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a scary-looking knee injury against the Denver Broncos in Week 7, but he will reportedly be able to return later in the 2019 season.

It seemed like the Kansas City Chiefs would have to fear the worst when Patrick Mahomes went down with a right knee injury during the team’s Week 7 win on Thursday Night Football against the Denver Broncos.

Mahomes suffered the injury early in the game, but he was able to walk off the field after waving away the cart. He suffered a dislocated knee cap, and there were worries that he may have suffered more serious structural damage that could end his 2019 season.

Thankfully, an MRI has revealed that no “significant additional” damage has occurred to Mahomes’ knee. The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Chiefs plan on having Mahomes back later this season, though the quarterback will receive additional medical opinions on the injury.

Although fans should be cautious since Mahomes will look for additional opinions, this is very good news for the Chiefs, especially after how worried everyone was on Thursday night. Mahomes will have to miss at least a few weeks, but if the Chiefs can remain in contention with Matt Moore at quarterback, then Mahomes will be ready to elevate the team in the later months and in the postseason.

The Chiefs showed great resiliency after Mahomes’ injury, defeating the Broncos 30-6 to get back on track after tough losses to the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans. Kansas City could get Mahomes back in three weeks, but this remains a situation to monitor.

Mahomes has changed the way fans look at the quarterback position and has been a leader on and off the field for Kansas City. This injury could have been heart-breaking for the Chiefs, but they could emerge stronger than ever once Mahomes returns this season. It is great to hear that the best player in the NFL has avoided a major knee injury.
