Monty McCutchen joins the latest episode of Fastbreak Breakfast to explain the latest NBA rule changes and debate the merits of instant replay.

Monty McCutchen has had a lot of pressure-packed moments. Before he became the NBA Vice President, Head of Referee Development and Training, he officiated 169 playoff games and was on the court for The Block in Game 7 of the 2016 Finals. But is he prepared for a showdown over rules on a breakfast-themed basketball podcast?

McCutchen returns again to Fastbreak Breakfast for an hour-long discussion on rules, instant replay and refereeing. Among the topics discussed:

  • What was the impetus for adding the Coach’s Challenge and what are possible problems that may occur?
  • How does the NBA competition committee balance the goal “to serve the game” in relation to getting calls exactly right through replay, and keeping the games moving and entertaining?
  • Will the points of education emphasis on calling traveling wear off?
  • Is the clear path foul having the desired effect of limiting these purposeful infractions to stop fast breaks? For a rule that was introduced with the goal of making the game more entertaining, has the instant replay element of detracted more than it helps?
  • Philosophically, it is preferable to not call a foul or violation that occurs, or incorrectly whistle a foul or violation that didn’t actually happen?
  • What are the difficulties of defining when an NBA player “gathers” the ball?
  • Exactly how many illegal steps does an NBA official say Corey Brewer took on this well-known Shaqtin’ A Fool clip?
