5 possible landing spots for Cam Newton in 2020
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Buccaneers have Jameis Winston playing out the fifth-year option on his rookie contract this year, with no sign they’re even remotely considering a contract extension. If they had someone besides Ryan Griffin to step in, with Blaine Gabbert (dislocated shoulder) on IR, a six turnover showing in Week 6 against the Panthers would have been cause for a benching. But barring a trade for someone who could realistically step in before Tuesday, or a signing, head coach Bruce Arians knows he’s stuck riding the Winston roller coaster for the final 10 games this season.
Looking to next year, Tampa Bay will be looking for a new quarterback. All options are open besides bringing Winston back, barring a shift in what the course appears to be. But as passed along by the Tampa Bay Times, SportsBettingDime.com actually has Winston as the current favorite to be the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback in 2020 (3:4 odds). Newton comes in at 25:1, for what it’s worth.
If he is cut and can choose his destination, Newton may look toward Tampa Bay with the revenge angle in mind and the chance to play the Panthers twice a year. But from the team’s end Newton may also be the best available quarterback during the offseason, and worth giving up a draft pick for.
