Ohio State defensive end Chase Young had four sacks and two forced fumbles to headline this week’s Top 10 college football players of the week.

In a list missing the top quarterbacks in Joe Burrow, Sam Ehlinger, Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Fields, the field was set for some players who have been under the radar all season. Western Michigan, Toledo and North Texas are all well-represented.

Even with Tagovailoa out, Mac Jones picked up the slack with a fantastic day in his debut start this season. Alabama now has the ability to put Tua’s return on hold and allow him to get fully healthy before his return.

College football players of the week

Honorable Mentions:

  • Tre Harbison, RB, Northern Illinois – 31 car, 158 yds, 2 TD
  • KJ Costello, QB, Stanford – 30/43 att, 312 yds, 3 TD
  • Josh Love, QB, San Jose State – 20/31 att, 314 yds, 3 TD

10. Bryant Koback, RB, Toledo

  • 32 car, 259 yds, 2 TD

In a fantastic game on Saturday between Toledo and Eastern Michigan, sophomore running back Bryant Koback had a phenomenal day on the ground. Getting a heavy workload, Koback made it count rushing for 259 yards and finding the end zone on two separate occasions.

9. Jamale Carothers, FB, Navy

  • 14 att, 154 yds, 3 TD

You have to love it when a fullback has a great day in today’s pass-happy game of football. Representing his position well, Navy’s sophomore fullback Jamale Carothers did a perfect job pounding through the tackles in a high-scoring affair against Tulane.

8. Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

  • 18/22 att, 235 yds, 3 TD

Filling in for potential Heisman winner Tua Tagovailoa is never easy but Mac Jones made his opportunity count in his first start of the season. The sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida only threw four incompletions to keep Alabama’s perfect season alive.

7. Cam Akers, RB, Florida State

  • 20 car, 144 yds, 4 TD

Cam Akers has been heating up the last couple weeks with over 140 yards in his last two games with five combined touchdowns. Akers was crucial to a victory over a disappointing Syracuse team.

6. Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma

  • 19/26 att, 395 yds, TD
  • 19 car, 96 yds, 3 TD

Jalen Hurts may have improved his Heisman resume, but his defense let him down in a surprising upset against Kansas State. Oklahoma’s chances to make the college football playoff took a massive hit yesterday, meaning our opportunities to watch Jalen Hurts ball out may be dwindling.

5. LeVante Bellamy, RB, Western Michigan

  • 17 car, 178 yds, 4 TD

The promising senior running back has been a bright spot all season for Western Michigan. The veteran back scored a 75-yard touchdown on Saturday setting the stage for a season-high 178 yards in a victory for the Broncos.

4. Sean Clifford, QB, Penn State

  • 18/32 att, 189 yds, 4 TD, Int

Just one season after Miles Sanders and Trace McSorley left the program for the NFL, Penn State has quietly become one of the nation’s top teams led by Sean Clifford. Clifford has looked sharp all season grinding out ways to win for the Nittany Lions.

3. Mason Fine, QB, North Texas

  • 26/38 att, 394 yds, 5 TD

Mason Fine is this week’s small-school player getting the representation he deserves. Fine threw five touchdowns in a shootout loss to Charlotte, but the senior did all he could to get the win. The North Texas quarterback now has 20 touchdowns and only six interceptions this season.

2. Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M

  • 17/23 att, 234 yds, 3 TD
  • 9 car, 76 yds, 2 TD

It has been a rough season for Kellen Mond and the Aggies who have already suffered three losses through eight games, but the junior quarterback put it all together against Mississippi State. Mond showcased his gifted athleticism throwing three touchdowns and scoring twice more on the ground.

1. Chase Young, EDGE, Ohio State

  • 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles

Rarely does one player win a football game for a team and even more rare is that player a defensive player, but Chase Young singlehandedly stole the show against the Wisconsin Badgers. Young looks to be the first real defensive Heisman threat since Tyrann Mathieu.
