2019 NFL trade deadline: Which teams made the best deals?
By John Buhler
6. Leonard Williams to the New York Giants from the New York Jets
In the leadup to the 2019 NFL trade deadline, we had a deal between teams that play in the same building. The New York Jets sent defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the New York Giants for a 2020 third-round pick and a 2021 fifth-round pick.
Williams was a former No. 6 overall pick by the Jets in the 2015 NFL Draft out of USC. He was a Pro Bowler for Gang Green in 2016 and had his fifth-year player option picked up by New York for 2019. He’ll be a free agent next year, but could be franchise tagged by a team like the Giants, who are looking to replace previous losses in the trenches in Damon Harrison and Olivier Vernon.
So giving up two future picks to a team you share the same media market for a player in a contract year could be a tad unorthodox, but it’s a move that hopefully makes the Giants a better team in the long-run. The Jets are rebuilding with a new general manager in the building in Joe Douglas.
New York drafted a replacement for Williams in the form of Alabama’s Quinnen Williams this past spring anyway. Overall, this is a decent deal for both teams. The Giants get a player they can build with, while the Jets get compensation for a guy they weren’t going to bring back. The reason this move ranks so low is that neither New York team is anything close to respectable this season.
