Maryland’s Jordan McNair passes away
During practice on May 29, Maryland Terrapins’ redshirt freshman Jordan McNair collapsed during practice. Two weeks later, he passed away from heatstroke. According to a report by NBC Sports, an investigation later found that “trainers on the scene did not follow proper procedures after [McNair] collapsed on the field.”
Head coach D.J. Durkin was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 11 as attention to the situation grew across the country.
An investigation was launched into what had been termed by ESPN to be a “toxic” culture at Maryland. Though the investigation found that the culture was not “toxic,” it did find “problems festered because too many players feared speaking out.”
Durkin was reinstated on Oct. 30. The University of Maryland then subsequently fired Durkin a day later as the Terrapins faced backlash from across the country for their initial decision.
