Deion Sanders would be a bigger dumpster fire than Willie Taggart as Florida State football coach

Florida State football legend Deion Sanders could replace Willie Taggart as the head coach of the Seminoles. Yes, this is totally real and not a joke.

Deion Sanders has never coached football at the collegiate level, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a candidate for a coveted college football job. In fact, Sanders is reportedly a candidate to be the head coach at his college, Florida State University, according to Ian Rapoport. But there’s a very real chance Sanders would be a bigger bust than Willie Taggart was for FSU.

Sanders broke records at Florida State and now is in the College Football Hall of Fame thanks to a remarkable career in Tallahassee. But an incredible playing career doesn’t exactly make him the most qualified to lead the Florida State Seminoles.

While technically, this wouldn’t be Sanders’ first coaching job, he’s certainly inexperienced when it comes to coaching at this level. He coached at the high school level, but only for a couple of seasons.

And that’s about it.

If FSU were to actually hire Sanders, plenty of attention would be paid to the program. The hiring of a high-profile, former legendary player would likely help the Noles out in their recruiting efforts, especially given just how good Sanders was for Florida State and how outgoing he seems to be.

But again, Sanders has never coached college football. There’s very little to suggest he would be prepared to take over this program with the state it is in and be able to turn it back into a winner.

Jimbo Fisher left a mess for Taggart. And Taggart, a successful coach who built both Western Kentucky and South Florida, was unable to clean that up in less than two seasons. Would Sanders be able to turn things around any quicker? It wouldn’t be fair to expect anyone, let alone a first-time college coach like Sanders would be to rebuild Florida State in such a short amount of time.

All that said, as Ron Flatter once wrote for ESPN, “where Sanders goes, teams win.” Thinking outside of the box and going in a new direction with a headline-catching hire could help FSU out. There’s even a chance Sanders would be immediately successful in Tallahassee.

But given his lack of experience, it’s difficult to see this potential hire paying off for Florida State in the long run. It’d be fun to see Sanders coaching a college team, but this doesn’t seem like the right situation.
