The Mayans MC finale was equal parts shocking and satisfying. The final moments of season 2 indicate that a massive storm is on the horizon.

The Mayans MC finale was wild. As season 2 came to a close, viewers were left with more questions than answers. The MC put themselves in a hell of a spot with their allies while the Reyes family solved one riddle but put themselves in the hottest of water in doing so. Season 3 is going to be a bloodbath.

Adelita and Los Olvidados aside, the Mayans MC was in a good place. The relationship with the Galindo Cartel was solid, EZ and Angel took care of their Potter problem and a gun deal brokered by the allied Sons of Anarchy was looking to be very beneficial for everyone involved. The only hang-up standing in the way of peace was the Vatos Malditos, who were (somewhat) responsible for the death of Riz. Unfortunately, that was too much to let slide.

Bishop wears two hats. He’s the king of the Mayans MC first and the president of the Santo Padre chapter second, at least, that’s what it would say on his letterhead. In reality, Bish is a club-first guy, so there was no way he was actually brokering a deal with the Vatos Malditos club. The meeting was a set-up to make them comfortable and the Mayans attack on the VM party was only shocking in terms of the heights to which they took their vengeance.

Not only did the attack on the Vatos Malditos tank the deal the Mayans, Sons, and Irish gunrunners had, but it destroyed everything Jax Teller worked for throughout his years as the leader of the Sons of Anarchy. Getting the Sons away from the gun trade and brokering peace with the Mayans were arguably his two biggest accomplishments. Now, both of those accomplishments are completely demolished. The former because the Sons are now back to dealing the guns and the latter because of how the attack went down.

While the VM party ambush was mostly effective, the Mayans were sloppy with their execution. They murdered a good number of innocents (wives, girlfriends, friends, etc.) and in the process of clearing the house, also killed a member of the Sons of Anarchy. This is a huge issue, as we know these clubs are not very forgiving if a member of their own is killed. We don’t yet know who the member is (I’m thinking it was Happy), but it won’t matter. He wore a Sons patch and Chibbs (Tommy Flanagan), and the rest of the crew from Charming are not going to be happy about it. Pair this with the Mayans going back on the deal and ruining everything the Sons set up and we’re looking at all-out war.

The brutal attack also marked a huge change in EZ Reyes. EZ was always a club-first prospect, doing what he had to do when he had to do it, but he also knew right from wrong. In this second season of Mayans MC, he showed how far he was willing to go for the club. In the finale, that length was stretched a little bit farther as he proudly wore his new patch and helped gun down everyone at the VM party. EZ is all in on the MC life and no longer seems hung up on killing whatsoever.

Another developing problem is the fact that EZ killed Miguel Galindo’s mother. Yeah, it took this long to get to that moment, which is indicative of how insane this finale was. Dita was content knowing her time had come and really gave the Reyes family no choice in their quest to avenge their mother, but it was still a pretty shocking moment, watching EZ choke the life out of her. They failed to properly cover up their motorcycle tracks when leaving the scene, which former MC president and current Galindo advisor Marcus Alvarez noticed. He’s already suspicious of EZ and this is sure to spark some interesting conversations next season.

The Reyes family solved their Potter problem, but they have a lot more on their plate now that EZ is a full-patch member of the club. War is on the horizon and as this episode showed, the Mayans aren’t afraid to back down from anyone.

After the firing of creator and co-writer Kurt Sutter, it will be interesting to see where Mayans MC goes next. Sutter was adamant early on that he wanted Sons referenced but did not want the original series to act as a crutch for Mayans MC. With a plot that is pointing towards a war with the Sons, one might wonder if this had anything to do with Sutter’s reported annoyance. Sutter himself claims his firing came from his attitude towards Disney (who own Fox) and the fact that he was a “loose cannon” who might not be right for the Disney brand. Ultimately this is probably the case, but it’s more fun to speculate that we’re in line for some big Sons of Anarchy cameos.

With Sutter gone, Elgin James will take on the role of the sole showrunner. In his departure, Sutter was very complimentary and supportive of James, who has co-run the show with Sutter through its first two seasons.

If (or when) Mayans MC gets renewed for a third season, it’s going to be the bloodiest season yet. A war with the Sons of Anarchy is the last thing the Mayans need, but it will be a very exciting time for Mayans fans.
