LSU got their first win vs. Alabama since Nov. 5, 2011, snapping an eight-game losing streak and giving us a chance to go down memory lane and see what the world was like in 2011.

The streak is dead. LSU got their first win against Alabama since 2011 and breaking the eight-game losing streak to their rivals while keeping their national championship dreams alive. Meanwhile, Alabama’s playoff hopes are on life support because of the lack of quality wins on their schedule and the lack of opportunities remaining on their schedule to repair the damage done by this loss.

While we have a few weeks to wonder if a one-loss, non-division champion Alabama can make the playoff, it’s all about LSU and their monumental win. In honor of the triumphant win over the Tide, I wanted to look back at what the world was like the last time LSU beat Alabama in a football game.

So much can change in a week so when you consider how long it’s been since LSU beat Alabama, there are some major world events that have taken place. I’ll keep it limited to fun events in the sports, entertainment, pop culture world, but let’s take a stroll down memory lane and enjoy the trip.

  • Game of Thrones was 4.5 months removed from its season 1 finale that saw Ned Stark lose his head and Daenerys Targaryen become the mother of dragons.
  • Breaking Bad was cemented as the best show on TV after Walter White and Gus Fring gave us the best face-off moment since Nic Cage and John Travolta.
  • The No. 1 song was “Someone Like You” by Adele before “We Found Love” by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris took the top spot for the rest of the year.
  • The No. 1 movie was Puss in Boots before The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 took the top spot two weeks later.
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 was the top-grossing movie of the year.
  • Marvel has released 18 movies.
  • Netflix was 15 months away from introducing streaming video
  • The iPhone 4S was just released
  • The Chicago Cubs have won a World Series
  • Joe Burrow was 14 years old
  • Ed Orgeron was in his second year as USC’s defensive line coach
  • Alabama has won four national championships

And of course there are a ton more I could add but you get the point. It’s been a long time since LSU beat Alabama in football.

So celebrate all night and into Sunday, LSU fans. This has been a party eight years in the making. A lot has changed in the world since the Tigers last beat Alabama, but just as it was in 2011, no one knows how to celebrate a win quite like LSU football fans.
