It’s finally over. The Arkansas Razorbacks are done with the losing, as they have fired their head coach Chad Morris, who was the worst SEC coach ever.

After getting boat raced at home by the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Saturday afternoon to the tune of 45-19, the Arkansas Razorbacks have done what is necessary and have fired their former head coach Chad Morris. Morris went 4-18 (0-14) over parts of two seasons after coming over from the SMU Mustangs in 2018.

Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek stated on Sunday morning, “As part of my continued evaluation, I have come to the conclusion that a change in leadership is necessary to move our football program forward and position it for success.”

Yurachek was hired by the University of Arkansas in December 2017 after previously worked for the University of Houston. Arkansas athletics were a mess, as the football team had just fired former head coach Bret Bielema and former athletic director Jeff Long had been fired the month before.

Morris was hired around the same time as Yurachek but didn’t even get to celebrate a second full year with the Razorbacks. Yurachek already made waves by hiring former Nevada Wolf Pack head coach Eric Musselman to replace Mike Anderson as the men’s basketball coach. That looks to be a good hire, but who knows what Arkansas can get after firing Morris mid-season? They had to.

USA TODAY Sports‘ Dan Wolken points out that Morris had the worst coaching record of any SEC head football coach of the modern era. Morris was worse than Rod Dowhower (Vanderbilt), Ed Orgeron (Ole Miss), Woody Widenhofer (Vanderbilt), Joke Philips (Kentucky) and Derek Dooley (Tennessee). Morris couldn’t even win a conference game. That’s how pathetic his tenure was.

So where is the Arkansas program going now? Hopefully up, because this is undoubtedly rock bottom. There are a few coaches they could try to pry away from their current gig and into Fayetteville.

Mike Leach has dominated at every remote outpost he’s worked at, but would he be interested in leaving a pretty sweet gig with the Washington State Cougars? Mike Norvell has done an incredible job with the Memphis Tigers, so he could be in the mix. And then there’s Arkansas native Gus Malzahn, who isn’t exactly getting universal praise with the Auburn Tigers.

Overall, it was a mistake to hire Morris away from SMU in the first place. He was only ever going to be imitation Malzahn. If you cut corners in hiring your head coach in the SEC, your football team is going to get roasted alive, which is exactly what happened with Morris at Arkansas. Yurachek and the Arkansas athletic program can’t mess this up. There is no program in worse shape in the SEC.
