Beating the Lions doesn’t get the Bears back into the playoff mix, but at least it ends Mitchell Trubisky’s run of winless starts.

This year hasn’t gone according to play for Mitchell Trubisky and the Bears. They entered the campaign with hopes of representing the NFC in the Super Bowl, but now it looks more likely they’ll miss the playoffs entirely. That’s put Trubisky’s status with Chicago squarely in jeopardy.

On Sunday, Trubisky at least managed to get his team a much-needed win over the injured Lions. Detroit was forced to play without Matthew Stafford which opened up the door for Chicago to get a nice victory inside the division. To Trubisky’s credit, he took advantage of the opportunity and had won of his more productive games of the season.

In the end, Trubisky finished the day 16-for-23 with 173 yards and three touchdowns. It was just the sort of efficient performance that Matt Nagy expects to see from quarterbacks inside his innovative offense. Unfortunately for Nagy and his staff, it’s not the type of play they’ve typically gotten out of Trubisky or Chase Daniel this season.

The challenge for Trubisky now shifts to putting two good games in a row. Optimistic Bears fans will note that he’s had a tendency to run hot and cold during his young career. The hope will be that the former North Carolina star can leverage this positive performance into a streak capable of catapulting Chicago back into the playoff race. The Bears still face an uphill climb if they want to overtake the Packers or Vikings inside the NFC North.

Trubisky’s main concern should be improving on a weekly basis. That is the best way he can make sure he remains this franchise’s quarterback of the present and future when the 2020 season begins. If the wheels come off down the stretch for Trubisky and his team it could easily tempt the organization to use a high draft pick on a quarterback. The good news for Trubisky is that Chicago still owes their first round pick to the Raiders from the Khalil Mack trade.

At worst, the win over the Lions gives the Bears and Trubisky a week of positive vibes in a season that hasn’t provided much joy. At best, this could turn into an unlikely turning point for their much-maligned quarterback.
