2020 NFL mock draft: Chargers find Philip Rivers’ replacement
By Brad Weiss
The Carolina Panthers placed star quarterback Cam Newton on IR this past week, ending his season, and potentially his run as the starter for the team. Newton has brought the Panthers fans so many special memories, but this is Kyle Allen’s team now, and he has been great since taking over for Newton under center.
One big reason for Allen’s success has been the play of Christian McCaffrey, who has turned into arguably the best running back in the NFL. On the defensive side of the ball, Carolina has their holes still, including on the edge, where they may look to target with their first round pick next April.
Yetur Gross-Matos has been a leader for a Penn State defense that was ranked as high as No. 4 in the country last week, and has the size, and speed to get the edge at the NFL level. This is a Panthers team that is very close to being a perennial playoff contender, and Gross-Matos is going to be a good one at getting to the quarterback.
During the 2019 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded away an elite talent at the cornerback position, sending Jalen Ramsey to the Los Angeles Rams for some draft picks. One of those picks is the Rams first round selection in 2020, which got better when the Rams lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers this past Sunday.
With that pick, the Jaguars should look to fill the void left by Ramsey, adding an elite talent like Trevon Diggs from Alabama. Diggs is the brother of Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Stefon Diggs, so he has an NFL pedigree, and plays the game the right way.
Jacksonville will be an interesting team to look at going forward, as we will get an extended look at Nick Foles the rest of the way, and see whether or not Gardner Minshew takes back over at quarterback in 2020. Either way, this team has a long way to go in terms of the roster, but having multiple first rounders helps, just ask the Oakland Raiders.
