Upset Alert: 5 college football teams in danger of losing in Week 12
5. Clemson Tigers
Rank: 3 | Opponent: Wake Forest Demon Deacons | Time: Saturday, Nov. 16, 3:30 p.m. ET
Don’t look now, but since everyone started doubting the Clemson Tigers after they narrowly escaped North Carolina at the end of September, Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne and the reigning National Champions have been absolutely rolling over the competition. Since that loss, they have scored at least 45 points in every game, have not won by fewer than 31 points in any game and, of course, have now reached No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
The biggest criticism of Clemson, through no fault of their own, this season has been their schedule. It’s a decidedly down year for the ACC, so the Tigers have needed to be dominant this season to make a CFP statement. On Saturday, though, they welcome arguably their toughest conference test of the season to Death Valley with the 7-2 Wake Forest Demon Deacons coming to town.
Unfortunately, Wake Forest comes into this matchup looking less dangerous than they could have. Star wide receiver Sage Surratt has been lost for the season and senior wideout Scotty Washington could also miss this game on Saturday as well. Even still, though, Wake Forest has proven to have a variety of weapons surrounding a budding star at quarterback, dual-threat passer Jamie Newman, who has 22 passing touchdowns and five rushing scores on the year.
Despite the short-handed offense, Newman is enough of an X-factor to put Clemson on upset alert in Week 12. If he can put forth a true superstar performance and make this game somewhat of a shootout, the Demon Deacons could very well push the Tigers to the brink of their first loss of the season.
