In the penultimate game of the Champions League, Genk host Red Bull Salzburg at Luminus Arena. The Belgian side are unable to advance to the knockout stage but could drop down to the Europa League if they finish third in the group. Salzburg can ensure themselves of at least a spot in the Europa League with a draw on Wednesday.
Genk have struggled this season and have a -1 goal differential in league play. The Smurfs are eighth in the Jupiler Pro League after going winless in their last four games. In the Champions League, Genk have one point after holding Napoli to a scoreless draw in their second game. The poor start to the season forced the club to make a managerial change, hiring former Stuttgart and Hamburg manager Hannes Wolf on Nov. 19. Wednesday’s game will be only the second game in charge for Wolf.
Despite being unbeaten in the Austrian Bundesliga, Red Bull Salzburg are only one point ahead of LASK in the title race. In the Champions League, Salzburg can still advance to the knockout stage but will have to win out and have one of Liverpool or Napoli lose both of their games. In the previous game against Genk, Salzburg won 6-2 behind a hat-trick from Erling Haaland. The 19-year-old Norwegian striker has 26 goals in 18 games season and has scored in all four of Red Bull’s Champions League games. Salzburg will look to get off to another incredible start against Genk with Haaland leading the attack.
