The college football players of the week from Week 14, includes a phenomenal performance from J.K. Dobbins and a surprising position at the top.

How often is it that fullbacks get represented in college football? Jamale Carothers is single-handedly bringing some attention back to a position that is becoming extinct in the game of football. With Navy’s option offense, the sophomore has had a great 2019 campaign and continues to put up numbers.

In an important game for the Jim Harbaugh tenure at Michigan, it was another disappointing loss for the Wolverines. J.K. Dobbins and Justin Fields made it look easy against Michigan’s defense who had no answers for the duo even after taking a shoe off one and injuring the other.

Kentucky’s Lynn Bowden Jr. had one of the wildest stat lines you’ll see all season to make a return appearance on our players of the week list.

College football players of the week

Honorable Mentions:

  • Kyle Trask, QB, Florida – 30/43 att, 343 yds, 3 TD
  • Bryce Perkins, QB, Virginia – 20/33 att, 311 yds, TD, Int, 19 car, 164 yds, 2 TD
  • Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU – 7 rec, 197 yds, 2 TD
  • Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson – 26/36 att, 295 yds, 3 TD, 8 car, 66 yds

10. Joe Burrow, QB, LSU

  • 23/32 att, 352 yds, 3 TD

Joe Burrow continues to lead the LSU Tigers to a potential national championship while also skyrocketing his draft stock in the process. Burrow has been comfortable within the pocket but has also flashed brilliance on the run when necessary.

9. J’mar Smith, QB, Louisiana Tech

  • 25/35 att, 331 yds, 3 TD
  • 15 car, 4 yds, TD

Louisiana Tech’s senior quarterback has led the Bulldogs to a 9-3 record while playing efficient football all season long. Flying into the four times, Smith was brilliant against an underwhelming UTSA Roadrunners team.

8. Eric Gray, RB, Tennessee

  • 25 car, 246 yds, 3 TD

The Volunteers have struggled all season within the SEC but young freshman running back Eric Gray finally busted on the scene against Vanderbilt. Without a touchdown all season on the ground, Gray scored three times for Tennessee on Saturday.

7. Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

  • 14/25 att, 302 yds, 4 TD

Every Ohio State fan nearly had a heart attack after watching Justin Fields pounding the ground while holding his knee against Michigan. However, the young Heisman hopeful came back into the game with a chip on his shoulder and avoided a potential disaster down the line for the Buckeyes.

6. Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama

  • 4 rec, 98 yds, 3 TD; 98-yard kick return for a TD

Jaylen Waddle may be the No. 4 receiver on Alabama but he’d be the No. 1 receiver for about 120 other schools. Waddle had three touchdown receptions, albeit in a losing effort for Alabama in the Iron Bowl to Auburn. He also made his presence felt with a scintillating 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

5. Ian Book, QB, Notre Dame

  • 17/30 att, 255 yds, 4 TD

Ian Book has been consistent all season for the Fighting Irish and that continued with a four-touchdown performance against Stanford. Book now has at least three touchdown passes in his last four games.

4. Zach Smith, QB, Tulsa

  • 21/30 att, 331 yds, 5 TD, Int

Zach Smith and Tulsa have struggled all season finding their identity. The junior quarterback has not had the most prolific season, but against a pathetic East Carolina defense, Smith finally found his groove.

3. Lynn Bowden Jr., QB, Kentucky

  • 22 car, 284 yds, 4 TD

Lynn Bowden Jr. is a wide receiver-turned-quarterback but his stat line shows he’s a heckuva running back. Only throwing two total passes throughout the whole game, the Kentucky quarterback used his legs to perfection running up and down the field.

2. J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State

  • 31 car, 211 yds, 4 TD

With all the attention Chuba Hubbard, Travis Etienne and Jonathan Taylor have received from the media so far this season, Dobbins showed the entire nation his resume on Saturday looking as talented as ever against Michigan. Dobbins is clearly the best running back the program has seen since Ezekiel Elliot.

1. Jamale Carothers, FB, Navy

  • 18 car, 188 yds, 5 TD

Jamale Carothers is an inspiration for fullbacks everywhere. The sophomore has propelled Navy’s option offense with a mix of both power and speed through every carry. Carothers’ five-touchdown game is his third multi-touchdown performance of the season.
