Following midweek games in Europe, the Bundesliga season resumes. On Saturday, Mainz host Borussia Dortmund at Opel Arena. Mainz are 13th in the table with 15 points. Dortmund are third in the Bundesliga, five points behind Borussia Monchengladbach.

Mainz got off to a terrible start to the Bundesliga season, winning only one of their first six games of the season. Ultimately, the club decided to fire manager Sandro Schwarz and hire Achim Beierlorzer. The decision paid immediate dividends as Mainz won their first two games under Beierlorzer. However, the club came back to earth in their last game, losing 2-1 to Augsburg. Mainz have been terrible defensively this season. In their 14 games, Mainz have allowed 34 goals, the most in the Bundesliga. The club’s -14 goal differential is third-worst in the Bundesliga and the club ultimately end up in the relegation zone if they do not improve defensively.

Borussia Dortmund smoked Fortuna Dusseldorf 5-0 in their last game. In the Champions League, Dortmund defeated Slavia Prague 2-1 to advance to the knockout stage. The wins have helped cool the pressure surrounding manager Lucien Farve’s seat. Farve was at risk of being fired had not made a chance to improve his club’s defense. In recent games, Farve have switched Dortmund’s formation from a back four to a back three. So far the results have been strong. In the front three, Dortmund have relied on Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho, and Paco Alcacer. The trio has combined for 20 goals this season.
