LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow broke four records en route to winning the 2019 Heisman Trophy.

Joe Burrow won the Heisman Trophy and broke a record for margin of victory, which is fitting for the LSU quarterback who smashed LSU, SEC and FBS records en route to his win.

Burrow received 2,608 votes, which was shy of O.J. Simpson‘s total of 2,853 votes but his 1,846 more votes than Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts gave him the largest win in Heisman history. The previous record was held by Simpson who had 1,750 more votes than Purdue’s Leroy Keyes in 1968. Justin Fields and Chase Young finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

Burrow received 93.8 percent of possible points, breaking the record previously held by Troy Smith who received 91.6 percent in 2006. He also received the highest percentage of first-place votes with 90.7 percent, breaking Smith’s record of 86.7 percent. Burrow also appeared on a record 95.5 percent of ballots, breaking the 95.2 percent held by Marcus Mariota in 2014.

He is the second LSU player to have ever won the award, joining halfback Billy Cannon, who won the award back in 1959. Nobody was going to really challenge Burrow for this award but we did wonder if he would win by a record-setting margin.

Burrow delivered an all-time great speech and got emotional a couple different times, especially when he thanked his coach and how much Ed Orgeron meant to him and his family.

Burrow is a big fan of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees who gave the other big-time quarterback in the Bayou a big shoutout.

Burrow has completed a clean sweep of all the major quarterback-centric awards in college football this year. He has already won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Walter Camp Award, the Davey O’Brien Award and the Maxwell Award. Burrow was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-SEC and is an SEC Champion.

He has his Bayou Bengals in the College Football Playoff for the first time in school history. LSU is the No. 1 team in the land as one of three undefeated teams left in major college football. The Tigers will face the No. 4 Big 12 Champion Oklahoma Sooners in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Saturday, Dec. 28. LSU is a phenomenal team, but it wouldn’t be there without Burrow.

It was a record-setting year of quarterbacking in the SEC for Burrow. He set three single-season records for the conference this season by throwing for 48 touchdowns passes, 4,715 yards and completing 77.9 percent of his passes. Burrow has at least one more game to improve on those numbers, possibly two if LSU defeats Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl to play for a national title.

What we saw out of Burrow this year was out-of-this-world. LSU had historically been a three-yards-and-a-cloud-out-dust offense, where throwing the ball was never a reason the Tigers won ball games. But thanks to the arrival of passing game coordinator Joe Brady via the NFL’s New Orleans Saints, Burrow has put together the greatest passing season in SEC football history.

Because of this prolific redshirt senior season, Burrow is widely expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. Burrow originally played his college football with the Ohio State Buckeyes before transferring to LSU ahead of the 2018 NCAA season.

This looks to be a great fit for him professionally. That said, Burrow is now forever a legend in college football. There has not been a season out of a signal-caller in quite some time. If he can now lead the Tigers to a national championship, this will be the greatest season out of a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback since at least Cam Newton did for the Auburn Tigers back in 2010.
