Ranking the best potential NFL head coaching openings
5. Los Angeles Chargers
If you want to predict who the surprise head coach firing in the NFL this year will be, look no further than the Chargers and Anthony Lynn. A year after going 12-4 and beating the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round, the team is 5-9 with two games to go. Eight of those nine losses have been by one score, with Philip Rivers often throwing bad interceptions at inopportune times, but the idea that bad teams find a way to lose close games stands here.
It looks to be the end of an era for the Chargers, as Rivers likely plays his final games for the only franchise he has ever known. They will also become a tenant in the Rams’ new home next season, which should only serve to widen the gap between the two teams with local fans. A new head coach-quarterback combination might be a viable move, if only to add star power and spark some interest in the team.
Even with some notable free agents coming, and a question mark (but also a wide range of potential options) at quarterback looking to next year, the Chargers’ job will have some appeal for head coaching candidates. But Lynn not necessarily being on the hot seat, at least until the Spanos’ pull the rug out from under him as no one sees it coming, takes this potential job opening down this list.
