Real Madrid are tied with Barcelona for first in La Liga. The two clubs played to a scoreless draw on Wednesday in their first meeting of the season. On Sunday, Real Madrid return to action, hosting Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Lions are seventh in La Liga with 27 points in their first 17 games.
Real Madrid have lost only one game this season. Manager Zinedine Zidane’s return to the club has Real competing for their first La Liga title since 2017. Real have conceded 12 goals, the second-fewest number of goals this season. While Madrid have been one of the better defending clubs, their attack has relied heavily on Karim Benzema. The French striker leads the club with 12 goals and five assists this season.
Athletic Bilbao have also only allowed 12 goals this season. While Madrid have scored 33 goals, Bilbao have only scored 19 goals, the ninth-fewest this season. The Lions are winless in their last two games but have picked up 14 points over their last seven games. Raul Garcia, Iker Muniain, and Inaki Williams have combined to score 13 of the club’s 19 goals this season. With Muniain expected to miss the game against Real with an injury, the Lions will rely heavily on Garcia and Williams to create goals on Sunday.
