Despite the fact Christmas has passed, gifts can still be sent or arrive late, so it’s important to know if the mail is being delivered on New Year’s Day.

The New Year is here, and it’s time to gear up for 2020. The murderer’s row of holidays is over. Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Eve has left you burnt out and spent. All you want to do is ship out those Thank You cards and get back into a normal, everyday type of grove. In order to achieve the last pieces of your holiday checklist, it’s important to know what’s available to you.

So if you’re expecting a package, a paycheck, a belated Christmas card, or a super belated invite to a loved one’s birthday party for their cat, don’t bother looking in the mailbox on New Year’s Day. There won’t be a single location open on Jan. 1 and if you absolutely need to send something via the U.S. postal service, you’re out of luck. All deliveries will resume as normal on the following day, as the last of the holiday season comes to an end.

The reason for the closing is very simple. The first of the new year is always considered a federal holiday, which means all government ran institutions and services are closed for the day. That is, all but the emergency services and the military of course. Post offices, banks, libraries and such are closed due to the holiday. So if you’re desperate and in need of getting stuff shipped, you’re better off checking another service or just waiting a day and getting it delivered on Jan. 2.

If you need to go anywhere else though, you should be in luck as most other businesses and such are open.
