Fantasy Football: How to handle the Jameis Winston quandary
Think about it for a moment. With those 30 interceptions, Winston was nearly averaging two picks per game. It was virtually a guarantee he would throw the ball into an awaiting defender’s arms every Sunday. I’m not even including the number of lost fumbles he had as well this year. He had 12 this year, making his turnover total balloon up to 42!
Turnovers have always been Winston’s issue throughout his career since entering the league in 2015. I said it before back in August with Winston. If he could cut down on the turnovers, he would be a solid fantasy gem. He has proven he can sling the ball for far distances and can be efficient when need be. The crux of the issue is his decision-making ability with the rock. Time and time again I’ve seen Winston make some questionable plays.
He would force the ball into areas on the field where a receiver wasn’t even close to being open. He would hold on to the ball too long to make a play, only to have it stripped from him by the opposing defense. It gets infuriating seeing such talent being squandered by his own doing.
The Buccaneers feel inclined to apply the franchise tag on Winston which would allow him to earn $26.895 million next year. Winston wants a long-term deal with Tampa Bay that is worth $30 million annually. So it appears the two sides have reached an impasse and they will have to hash it out during the offseason.
For now, we will have to assume he will remain a Buccaneer for the 2020 season and if that’s the case, then what? Well if you ask me I wouldn’t go near Winston no matter how enticing he may appear to you. Yes I know he has a cannon for an arm and can light up a scoreboard but it’s those turnovers that make me cringe.
