Conor McGregor’s next fight should be against Jorge Masvidal

With Conor McGregor scoring a sub-minute TKO of Donald Cerrone at UFC 246, the focus now turns to who should he face next and that’s Jorge Masvidal.

UFC president Dana White want s to make Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagamedov 2 but McGregor doesn’t want to wait and could be fighting as soon as the spring. McGregor told Ariel Helwani that he wants to fight three to four times in 2020, and while the Nurmagamedov fight could happen according to White, McGregor wants to stay at welterweight for now. That means measuring up his next opponent. The two big match-ups’ to make include UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and BMF titleholder Jorge Masvidal.

Both would be at welterweight and both offer McGregor a unique goal to chase. For Usman, it’s obviously about the title. McGregor wants a third championship in a third weight class, which would be a new UFC record If we’re being honest, the buzz around Usman was mainly due to his feud with Colby Covington. Now that the feud between those two has ended, Usman doesn’t have the same buzz.

If the goal is to make the most money as possible, that’s Jorge Masvidal. Masvidal is arguably the biggest name in the division now, not named McGregor. Despite not being the welterweight champion, he’s the name fans want to see. He’s the money match up, that alone should be enough. However, he’s also an easier matchup.

Let’s be honest about Masvidal’s run in recent months, he’s beaten some guys that maybe aren’t much more than ‘names’ anymore. Nate Diaz didn’t look like he was wanting to engage, Ben Askren had a degenerating hip and Darren Till was described as an upset. Masvidal though has a style that makes fans want to see him. He can take a beating, allowing for McGregor to really work the fight with strikes, which fans love. The styles the two use would make that fight so much more exciting than anything with Usman.

Masvidal is the better money fight and the better matchup for McGregor, and those are the only two reasons McGregor should look at.
