Off the board first in fantasy: Mike Evans or Chris Godwin?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have two outstanding wide receivers. Who should you take first in a fantasy football draft: Mike Evans or Chris Godwin?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have two incredible wide receivers in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. For years, Evans has been arguably one of the five-best wide receivers in football. We don’t often talk about it because he’s playing on a Buccaneers franchise that hasn’t made the NFL playoffs in over a decade. That being said, Godwin did have a monster 2019 NFL season. Who is better?

The Fantasy Footballers like both Buccaneers receivers entering fantasy football season next year, but their pick of the two might shock you. They are leaning Godwin over Evans in 2020, but not by much. What it really comes down to is Godwin is the more consistent player over Evans, given the position each guy plays in Bruce Arians’ Tampa Bay offense.

Godwin plays more in the slot than Evans. This leads to Godwin getting more volume than Evans, who is still an incredibly dominant player in the vertical passing game on the outside. However, this does lead Evans to bust more often than Godwin. In short, a great pass defense can neutralize Evans more effectively on the outside than Godwin in the slot.

Overall, this is a great problem for the Buccaneers to have. They have arguably two of the 10 best wide receivers in football. No, they are not a redundancy of each other, as both receivers can do a myriad of things in this Tampa Bay offense. If you want a decent comparison, just look at what the Minnesota Vikings have in Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs.

Both are sensational receivers for the Vikings, but Thielen is usually the better fantasy play because he is the Godwin of this offseason, as in he’s the high-volume possession receiver. But like Evans, Diggs is that home-run threat you always love to have on the outside. All he needs is one big-time play to make a difference for this team, as well as your fantasy football team.

Ultimately, you should be able to draft either Tampa Bay wide receiver in the second or third round of your next fantasy football draft. You can try to draft for value, but it’s not bad if you get the one you like less in your draft. Odds are, you’ll still end up with a very productive wide receiver who will help you win in fantasy next fall.
