Baltimore Ravens free agency 2020: Top 5 targets
2. Jadeveon Clowney, DE
Heading into any free agency window, you should always have at least one “reach” candidate. You know, the one player that would absorb a lot of your available salary cap, but also make your team that much better?
Jadeveon Clowney is that player for the Ravens this offseason. Mentioned earlier on the Judon slide, the team needs a game-wrecking pass rusher on their defense.
Currently with just over 34.6 million in available salary cap and the possibility for more, pursuing Clowney is a must. The dynamic 26-year-old is due for a big payday and he would be worth the money for the Ravens.
Clowney plays predominately on the edge. Although, he is just as effective as a down linemen as he is playing upright. In 2019, he had three sacks, 13 quarterback hits, seven tackles for loss and one pick in 13 games with the Seattle Seahawks.
Pro Football Focus awarded him with a overall player grade of 87.3, which is a very high mark. Even more impressive about Clowney’s 2019 season is the fact it was one of his down years.
Whenever a large contract is given out, there is always the concern that the player receiving the deal may get complacent. However, with John Harbaugh and the team coaching staff keeping him concentrated, this shouldn’t deter the Ravens from offering Clowney a big contract.
When you’re this close like the Ravens current roster is, you can gamble in free agency in order to fill out your largest needs. So, Clowney should be high on Eric DeCosta’s list.
