With a new head coach in Mike McCarthy and a ton of cap space, the Dallas Cowboys figure to be active in free agency as they look to return to the postseason.

For the past 24 years, it has been a disappointing time for the Dallas Cowboys.

Since winning Super Bowl XXX in 1996, the Cowboys have only made the postseason nine times and never advanced beyond the Divisional Round, a massive failure for America’s Team.

Owner Jerry Jones appears committed to changing that, letting go of long time coach Jason Garrett and hiring former Green Bay Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy to lead his team. McCarthy is the first proven coach Jones has hired since Bill Parcells, and he should do wonders to get more out of an underachieving group that went 8-8 despite possessing one of the most talented rosters in football.

The Cowboys do have $73 million in cap space before making any moves, but it also comes with the caveat that three of their most important players are pending free agents: Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, and Byron Jones. Prescott and Cooper will likely receive tags of some sort, but with that in mind let’s take a look at the five biggest targets for the Cowboys in free agency.

5. Eric Ebron, TE

One of the few holes for the Cowboys on offense a year ago was at tight end, where Jason Witten didn’t offer a ton of value in his return from retirement. Witten put up a pedestrian 63 catches for 529 yards and four touchdowns, and the expectation is that last season was his final year in Dallas.

The Cowboys could use a bit more explosive potential out of the tight end position, and Ebron could fit the bill here. Ebron is not a great blocker, but he is only a year removed from a monstrous season where he caught 13 touchdowns for the Indianapolis Colts. Adding a vertical element up the seam could help Prescott and company make another explosive leap on offense.
