Philip Rivers rumors: 5 best fits in NFL free agency
4. Chicago Bears
The company line in Chicago right now is that Mitch Trubisky will be the starting quarterback next year, with a decision on his fifth-year option for 2021 to come. But with how limited he looks most of the time, and head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace on seats that are set to really heat up, adding viable competition has to be on the offseason radar. Bringing back Chase Daniel or signing a different veteran of a similar career backup ilk does not qualify.
Rivers may have no interest in playing in cold weather, which would automatically rule out Chicago and anywhere else where winter could hit hard late in the season. But in terms of an opportunity to start, despite the Bears’ “commitment” to Trubisky, and win with an interesting set of skill position talent around him as well as a defense that’s still pretty good, Chicago and the Rivers could be a match.
It was a different situation, but Ryan Tannehill wound up being traded to the Titans behind arguably the most vulnerable starting quarterback in the league last offseason. He of course eventually took over the starting job, and Tennessee reached the AFC Championship Game. The Bears have a similarly vulnerable starter this offseason, and Rivers should be looking at teams with a question mark under center just as much as teams with a possible (or likely) void to fill.
