MLS: What does Rodolfo Pizarro bring to Inter Miami?

Midfielder Rodolfo Pizarro is joining Inter Miami as their second Designated Player. What does he bring to the MLS expansion club?

There are only a few weeks left until the start of the 2020 MLS season and Inter Miami are finally bringing in the kind of big names that have been linked with David Beckham’s new club.

On Wednesday, Liga MX club Monterrey announced that midfielder Rodolfo Pizzaro would be leaving the club to pursue an opportunity with Inter Miami. It marks the first time the 25-year-old Mexican international will play outside of Liga MX.

Pizarro is a major addition for a club looking to make a statement in their inaugural season.

In his Liga MX career, he played for Pachuca, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. He won a Liga MX title with all three clubs and won the CONCACAF Champions League with the latter two sides. He also got experience playing in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019, when Monterrey finished in third place.

Pizarro is a versatile player, who has experience playing on the wing and behind the striker in the central midfield. He’s also a perfect fit for Inter Miami since manager Diego Alonso is familiar with Pizarro’s skills and talents — he coached Pizarro at both Pachuca and Monterrey. Similarly, Pizzaro will be familiar with Alonso’s tactics and style of play.

Pizarro probably won’t score at the same rate as some of the star forwards Inter Miami have been linked with, but he is great at creating goal-scoring opportunities, setting up his teammates and has shown he can score himself. He is a technically gifted player who can rattle an opposing defense and thrives on a quick pace of play.

Pizarro has 25 appearances and five goals for the Mexican national team. He has been getting more playing time under Tata Martino, the former manager of Atlanta United and current manager of El Tri. Martino reportedly recommended Pizarro to Inter Miami General Manager Paul McDonough, who hired Martino when he was with Atlanta United. He’s the fourth Mexican player to join MLS this offseason.

Inter Miami will kickoff their inaugural season on Sunday, March 1st against LAFC.
