By Adam Stocker
Atalanta face Valencia at the San Siro on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Here’s all the info you need to watch this Champions League match.
After weeks of anticipation, the Champions League returns. In the first leg of the round of 16, Atalanta host Valencia at the San Siro in Milan.
Atalanta’s first appearance in the Champions League has already been memorable. The Goddess became the first team in Champions League history to advance to the knockout stage after losing the first three games of the group stage. Valencia won their group after beating Ajax in Amsterdam on the final day of the group stage.
Atalanta are fourth in Serie A but well behind Juventus, Lazio and Inter Milan in the title race. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has Atalanta playing a very aggressive style. The Goddess are among the highest-scoring clubs in Europe, scoring 63 goals in Serie A. However, because of their style of play, Atalanta are vulnerable defensively and have allowed 32 goals. Josip Ilicic and Luis Muriel have combined for 28 goals in all competitions this season. With their best striker, Duvan Zapata healthy again, Atalanta’s attack should be even more dangerous.
Valencia are seventh in La Liga, two points behind fourth-place Atletico Madrid. The Bats enter the first leg dealing with an injury crisis. Keeper Jasper Cillessen, center-back Gabriel Paulista, and striker Rodrigo are all expected to miss the game on Wednesday. Manager Albert Celades will likely take a conservative approach in the first leg and try to win the second leg at home to advance to the quarterfinal. Maxi Gomez will play a key role for Valencia. Gomez leads the club with nine goals in all competitions this season.
