Week #2 of the XFL saw the emergence of the league’s most successful quarterback-to-wide receiver combination.  Houston quarterback Phillip (P.K.) Walker and wide receiver Cam Phillips have combined for four touchdown passes in victories over Los Angeles and St. Louis.

Walker, who is 5’ 11”, was considered too small for the NFL and some officials in the “senior” league questioned his passing accuracy.  Now after two games, he leads the XFL in scoring with 69 fantasy football points, has thrown 7 touchdown passes and one interception, and has completed 61.4% (43 out of 70) of his passes.

Phillips has been targeted 18 times in two games by Walker and caught 12 passes for 130 yards.  That’s not a lot of receiving yards, but in the red zone Walker is constantly looking for Phillips to catch a touchdown pass.

As for Week #2 of the XFL schedule, the Sunday nightcap between the Houston Roughnecks and St. Louis Battlehawks was the most exciting game.  St. Louis quarterback Jordan Ta’amu tried to bring his team back for a road victory, but fell short in a 28-24 loss.

Statistically, Ta’amu outperformed Walker by completing 81.1% (30 out of 37) passes for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns.  The problem was the St. Louis quarterback threw two interceptions that led to Roughneck touchdowns.

In the other battle of undefeated teams, we saw the D.C. Defenders rout the N.Y. Guardians, 27-0 on Saturday.  The game featured a verbal meltdown by Guardians Matt McGloin, who couldn’t get anything going on offense, and was replaced by quarterback Marquise Williams.  (See Brad Berreman’s FanSided article entitled “Matt McGloin becomes early poster boy for access XFL provides” for more details on this incident.)

The Defenders pitched a shutout by playing solid defense that held the Guardians to less than 100 yards passing and rushing, and returned one pass interception for a touchdown. D.C. quarterback Cardale Jones did an admirable job of leading the Defenders to 108 yards on the ground and 276 yards passing.

The Dallas-Los Angeles game was a battle of debuts.  Landry Jones started as the Dallas Renegades quarterback and Josh Johnson was the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Wildcats.

The games looked like a battle between field goal kickers as Dallas led 6-3 deep into the 3rd quarter.  L.A. scored the first touchdown with just under 12 minutes to play as Josh Johnson found wide receiver Nelson Spruce for a 6-yard touchdown pass.

The remainder of the game turned into a shootout with Dallas scoring touchdowns to the Wildcats’ one touchdown.

Seattle must have recruited the Seahawks’ 12th man, because the noise level at CenturyLink Field was incredibly loud and it had the desired effect as the Dragons rallied from a 9-0 deficit in the 3rd quarter to defeat the Tampa Bay Vipers, 17-9.

Tampa Bay’s offense is still without a touchdown as their TD came on a 78-yard return by cornerback Tarvarus McFadden of a pass interception.  Seattle also intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter.

Next. Matt McGloin is what the XFL should be. dark
