Amari Cooper rumors: 5 best fits in NFL free agency
3. Indianapolis Colts
Current cap space: $86,137,492
How do we really evaluate the Colts? Everything looked bright. Andrew Luck was back and healthy, the offensive line was one of the league’s best, and the team was once again a playoff lock with Super Bowl aspirations.
Until last preseason. Luck retired, which left Chris Ballard and Frank Reich scrambling for a plan under center. Eventually, Jacoby Brissett was given the job and a fresh two-year contract worth $30 million.
It’s unknown what the plan at quarterback is moving forward. With a team build to win, it appears Brissett isn’t a good enough player right now.
The team’s success was contingent purely on establishing the run and playing with leads. If you have an elite defense you can get away with that. But as the team’s 7-9 record demonstrated, they need more through the air.
Not only is Cooper a fit, the team can spend up to, and even higher, than market value for him. Signing him would still leave them with more than enough to make other signings too.
Zach Pascal had a nice year. But missing Eric Ebron and T.Y. Hilton didn’t help Brissett. Putting Cooper and Hilton together would give the Colts one of the best receiving tandems in the league.
