15 college football recruits who had the sickest high school highlight tape
12. Leonard Fournette
There was never any doubting the potential and ability of Leonard Fournette. You aren’t sleeping on a recruit if he’s the No. 1 overall player in the 2014 class coming out of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans and such was the case with the 6-foot-1, 226-pound running back. But even with the hype, that doesn’t lessen how nasty his highlights from high school were.
If a high school defender got their hands on Fournette, good luck to them trying to bring him down. He was a brick wall that would-be tacklers seemingly bounced off of — or were thrown off of. And just getting to the running back at the high school level was a tall task in itself as his speed and ability to make players miss in a phone booth was elite, hence his highly touted profile as a recruit.
Choosing to stay in Louisiana and head to LSU to play his college football, Fournette made an immediate impact as he had 187 carries for 1,034 yards and 10 touchdowns as a freshman. He then exploded on the college football world as a sophomore, going off for 1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns on 300 carries. He then became a top-five NFL Draft pick in 2017 after an injury-riddled junior campaign in Baton Rouge.
Fournette has been inconsistent, injury-prone and, frankly, not worth the No. 4 pick the Jaguars spent on him at this point in his NFL career. However, he appeared to be on the upswing in the 2019 campaign and the dominant traits he displayed as a recruit are still present.
