9. Sam McGuffie

If you’re looking for a college football recruit whose tape quite literally launched him to stardom, then look no further than Sam McGuffie. A four-star prospect coming out of Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, TX, the “McGuffie Tape” got the football world buzzing as soon as it made its way onto the scene, even if this guy was only the No. 17 running back in the 2008 recruiting class.

Watching McGuffie run in high school was like watching an adult play Pop Warner. The speed and burst he played with made him seem as if he couldn’t be touched once he got a full head of steam, which didn’t take long for him to do. So when he committed to play for the Michigan Wolverines, it seemed as if the next star running back from the Big Ten was already written in pen.

Instead, the football career never quite panned out for McGuffie. After flashing but suffering three concussions as a freshman for Michigan, he transferred to play for the Rice Owls. He had a strong year in 2010 but injuries bothered him again in 2011 before he moved to wide receiver for his final college season. While he bounced around NFL training camps and practice squads, he never fully caught on.

Also a track and field star in college, McGuffie’s athletic career didn’t stop when his time in football ended. In 2015, he joined the USA Bobsled National Team and competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea for Team USA in both the four- and two-man events. But in terms of football, the “McGuffie Tape” will live forever.
