Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Sign Philip Rivers

All the signs appear to be pointing to the Buccaneers bringing back Jameis Winston.

There’s obvious appeal to re-signing a quarterback who is still only 26 and unquestionably has the talent to be a franchise passer.

However, at a certain point Winston is who he is. He is a quarterback who can make every throw and keep a team in games, but also give games away with confounding decisions. A 2019 season that featured 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions proved as much.

Winston is thought to want somewhere in the region of $30million a year. For likely less money, the Buccaneers could lure Rivers, a similarly turnover-prone quarterback who is vastly more experienced and has enjoyed significantly more success than Winston.

Having moved his family from San Diego to Florida, the Bucs could be a perfect fit for Rivers. Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians has history revitalizing aging quarterbacks and the Buccaneers have a host of top-tier weapons at the skill positions.

Rivers may be past his peak, but by signing him the Bucs can save money and land a quarterback with a similar skill set who does a superior job of dealing with pressure. After years of frustration with Winston, it’s worth seeing if Rivers can get the Bucs to the postseason in the final years of his career.
