3. Boston Red Sox

The trade of Mookie Betts has obviously left the Red Sox with a significant void. The addition of Kevin Pillar is sneaky good, but Alex Verdugo (acquired from the Dodgers in the Betts deal) is a question mark for Opening Day with a back injury and Jackie Bradley still lingers as a trade candidate himself.

In a piece for The Athletic last week (subscription required), former MLB general manager Jim Bowden put Boston at No. 7 on his list of team fits for Puig. Even with a clogged outfield, and some moving parts, there’s a reasonable case for it.

For the suddenly payroll-conscious Red Sox, Puig would not break the bank as a late addition. If nothing else, signing him now and giving him a spring-training opportunity may create a trade asset heading toward Opening Day.
