Of all the mid-major conference tournaments, there may not be one as fun as the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. Informally known as Arch Madness, the showdown in St. Louis often produces a team capable of scoring big upsets in March Madness.
Northern Iowa, which went a robust 25-5 during the regular season, won at Colorado in the regular season and only lost to West Virginia in the non-conference schedule. Led by sweet-shooting junior A.J. Green, who knocks down 39.5 percent of his triples, the Panthers are a legitimate at-large contender in a weak bubble year.
The smartest path for the Panthers is to win their conference’s automatic bid, which they will attempt to do this week when they start their run through Arch Madness with the winner of an 8-9 matchup between Drake and Illinois State. Assuming they survive that game, Northern Iowa will get the winner of the 4-5 game between Bradley and Southern Illinois.
The Panthers split with both Loyola-Chicago and Indiana State, winning at home and losing on the road. With the conference tournament at a neutral site, the MVC’s automatic bid could go to anyone.
Loyola-Chicago is the No. 2 seed and they await the winner of the 7-10 game, featuring Valparaiso and Evansville (which somehow won at Kentucky and went 0-18 in MVC play, becoming the first team to beat the AP No. 1 and go winless in conference). Indiana State is the no. 3 seed and they start off their Arch Madness run against Missouri State.
Cameron Krutwig averages 15.3 points per game and eight rebounds a night for the Ramblers, who are the No. 2 seed in the MVC Tournament. Loyola-Chicago will have to win the automatic bid to get back to the dance but that isn’t necessarily the case for the league’s top seed.
