PGA Tour fantasy golf: The Players FanDuel player selections
By Hans Geevers
This week, the PGA Tour presents the DFS community with The Players. Let’s take a look at this prestigious event from a fantasy golf perspective!
Before we dive into my fantasy golf/FanDuel player selections let’s have a look at the golf course the field will play and review the key statistics that I feel are the most important to a golfer’s success this week.
The 2020 Players will be played at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course is a par 72 that measures 7,189 yards. This track is a Pete Dye design that is best described as a classical golf course. The TPC Sawgrass course will present this week’s field with greens that feature TifEagle Bermuda grass. It should be noted that this golf course has a total of 88 bunkers! Weather can also be a major factor on this track. If the wind begins to blow this week, we could see some high scores.
Key Facts
- Water is in play on 14 of the 18 holes.
- The TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course has hosted The Players every year since 1982.
- Last year, the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course ranked 23rd out of 49 courses on the PGA Tour in terms of difficulty.
The key statistics that I will be focusing on this week are par four scoring, GIR (greens in regulation), strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained around the green.
Here are my fantasy golf/FanDuel player selections for The Players!
Bryson DeChambeau $11,300
I am leading off my FanDuel player selections with 26 year old American Bryson DeChambeau. In my opinion, the current 13th ranked golfer in the world is trending towards a win. DeChambeau has been playing some outstanding golf recently! Let’s take a look at his last three tournament results to better shed light on his outstanding play. He finished fifth at the Genesis Invitational in February, second at the WGC-Mexico Championship which was also in February, and finally Bryson finished fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week.
Bryson also checks the box for me when it comes to key statistics. DeChambeau is currently ranked sixth in par four scoring average (3.94), tenth in strokes gained tee to green (1.424), and fourth in actual scoring average (68.92) on the PGA Tour.
I also like the fact that Bryson DeChambeau has performed well at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course previously. More specifically, Bryson finished 20th at the 2019 Players.
Rory McIlroy $12,200
McIlroy has finished in the top five in seven consecutive tournaments on the PGA Tour, including a fifth place result at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week. Rory currently ranks second in strokes gained tee to green (2.400) and 17th in par four scoring (3.96) on the PGA Tour. McIlroy is also the defending champion of The Players. He won The Players in 2019 with a final cumulative four round score of 16 under par.
Sungjae Im $10,400
He currently ranks 22nd in scoring tee to green (1.103) and tenth for scoring average (69.623) on the PGA Tour. More importantly, Im has two consecutive top three finishes on the PGA Tour, including a win at the Honda Classic earlier this month.
Daniel Berger $9,200
Berger arrives at The Players on the heels of three consecutive top nine finishes, including a fourth place result at the Honda Classic last month.
Joel Dahmen $8,100
He finished 12th at The 2019 Players. Additionally, Dahmen has four top 14 finishes in his last five tournaments, including a fifth place result at the Genesis Invitational in February.
Jhonnattan Vegas $7,700
Vegas finished third at The 2019 Players. He also finished ninth at the Puerto Rico Open last month.
As always, good luck! Enjoy watching the 2020 edition of The Players!
