2020 NFL mock draft first round and fantasy impacts
By Raju Byfield
22nd Overall: Buffalo Bills – Tee Higgins (WR – Clemson)
Team Needs
Wide Receiver, Edge rusher, Offensive line, Running Back, Defensive Tackle
Picks: 22 (1st), 54 (2nd), 86 (3rd), 128 (4th), 156 (5th), 168 (5th), 188 (6th), 201 (6th), 204 (6th)
The Buffalo Bills have done a laughable job of surrounding Josh Allen with talent. John Brown was a strong addition, but relying on names like Cole Beasley and Duke Williams when your defense is contender ready is almost criminal. Tee Higgins has the talent and ball skills to change the dynamic of the Bills offense in an instant. A long receiver with good speed and a great catch radius, Higgins will be able to corral throws that would have otherwise gone errant to the rest of the Bills receivers. He is also better after the catch than given credit for, and should impress enough in the offseason to immediately be slotted in as a starter in two wide sets.
Team Impact
The Bills continuously make questionable decisions at wideout, but this would be a home run pick for them. Higgins has the talent to be in the conversation as the first wideout off the board in most draft classes, so the Bills should be counting themselves as lucky that he is still on the board due to the incredible top end talent in the 2020 NFL Draft. Bills fans may be a little sour on Clemson wideouts after the Sammy Watkins swing and miss, but Higgins is the real deal. Higgins, Brown, and Beasley is not an ideal trio, but the Bills can address an upgrade on Beasley with one of their fifth or sixth round selections.
Fantasy Impact
If Higgins gets drafted to the Bills he will be an immediate WR3 candidate in redraft leagues. It stands to reason that he will impress coaches enough to get number one level targets, while Brown operates as the number one in the eyes of opposing defenses. However, he Bills slot receiver, whether it is Beasley or someone else will likely eat enough targets to keep Higgins from the WR2 conversation outside of cake matchups or bye weeks. In dynasty leagues, Higgins projects as a borderline WR2. As alluded to above, he is unlikely to reach WR2 status in his rookie season, but he has upper echelon WR2 talent and the ball skills to succeed even with someone like Josh Allen. He is someone to target anywhere after 1.07 in dynasty rookie drafts.
