MLB thinking of playing World Series at neutral site

While MLB is under a spring training cancellation and a delayed start to the regular season, no stone is being left unturned.

At this rate, it seems that no one is 100 percent sure where the MLB’s Fall Classic is going to be played.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic currently taking its toll throughout the United States, this year’s spring training games have already been canceled. On top of that, the start of the 2020 regular season has been delayed by at least two weeks, per MLB’s official statement released on Thursday.

It is unknown whether play will truly begin after the two-week delay is over, although that is the plan as things currently stand. Per Miami Marlins reporter Craig Mish, there’s been plenty of conversation about many things baseball-related, including the World Series:

A 162-game regular season and an entire postseason of play would certainly push things back a bit. Assuming a complete season is played, this could force the World Series (which is traditionally played at the end of October or into the opening of November) into a time in which the temperature is significantly colder. Playing conditions could possibly become a concern.

With that said, moving the end of the postseason to a neutral site would be robbing one team of an opportunity it would’ve had in the event of a normal schedule. For talks centered around somewhere like Marlins Park to be happening this early doesn’t necessarily bode well for what the future may hold.

At any rate, these talks are nothing more than preliminary discussions and until the MLB has more pressing matters to attend to. While the league joins many others in suspending play as a precaution against the spread of coronavirus, it also has to ensure games will actually begin when they’ve been rescheduled to.
