2020 NFL Draft: 5 players Dolphins could take in Round 1
2. Justin Herbert
If Herbert had made the choice to leave Oregon last season he would have likely been in contention to be the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Instead, he chose to play one more year at Oregon and his lack of development popped up as a red flag for scouts.
That doesn’t mean Herbert is a bad quarterback prospect. He’s still worthy of solid consideration as a first round pick. In many ways, he’s just a better version of what Love offers NFL teams at the position.
Herbert isn’t quite the electric athlete scouts want him to be, but he does have above average athletic ability in a number of different departments. He isn’t going to blow anyone away with his 40-yard dash time, but he can hurt defenses by making plays on the edge. His lack of accuracy on intermediate and deep throws is a concern, but he still flashes above average arm strength.
Herbert needs to walk into a healthy offensive ecosystem if he’s going to be successful. It’s questionable whether or not the Dolphins qualify. Picking him at No. 5 would be a definite reach, but sliding back in the top 10 and still picking him to be their starter in 2020 is a reasonable draft strategy. It’s not the right move for Miami, but it’s not the worst potential move for the franchise either.
