2. Chris Harris Jr.

The 49ers are another team working too close to the cap to be significant players in free agency as they plot an immediate return to the Super Bowl.

San Francisco’s situation is complicated by the Niners’ desire to re-sign impending free agents Arik Armstead, Jimmie Ward, and Emmanuel Sanders.

Operating with just under $18m in cap space, that will be extremely difficult for them to do. The reality is the Niners will need to make cuts and explore trades if they are to bring back some of their own and make free-agent additions.

Having seen their Super Bowl hopes derailed by Chris Jones, interior O-Line help is a must for San Francisco. The 49ers’ VP of Player Personnel, Adam Peters, was part of the Broncos’ front office when Denver drafted McGovern in 2016.

The Peters connection could also be key to landing Harris. Entering his age 31 season, playing for a contender should be most important to Harris, who would bring further veteran experience and give the Niners an alternative to Emmanuel Moseley and Ahkello Witherspoon.

Following Garrett Celek’s retirement, the Niners lack an established second tight end behind George Kittle. After an injury-hindered 2019, Ebron may be available at a more manageable price.
