2. New England Patriots

Now that Tom Brady has declared he’s not coming back, the Patriots are in the mix for a quarterback. There’s no way second-year man Jarrett Stidham is going to be automatically anointed the starter, and Cody Kessler should not be one snap away from seeing the field for any team with expectations.

Bill Belichick will be thoroughly motivated to prove he can win at a high level without Brady, and in many respects Teddy Bridgewater and Andy Dalton stand out as ideal fits to step in. But shifting the equation to pure upside, Newton may stand atop that particular heap.

New England has a wide swath of potential options to consider, from Bridgewater and Dalton to Jameis Winston or Philip Rivers on down to Jacoby Brissett or Josh Rosen. But any list of options to replace Brady if he indeed departed has not really been complete without Newton, and now the Patriots can enter the mix to get him, unabated on all fronts as they try to keep a window of Super Bowl expectations wide open.
