After spending his entire career as a member of the Chargers, Philip Rivers is heading back east to become the starting quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts are still searching for a long term solution at quarterback after Andrew Luck retired abruptly last summer, but they are hoping Philip Rivers can buy them some more time. The long-time signal-caller of the Chargers is headed to Indianapolis to take over the starting quarterback job.

This move has been heavily rumored for weeks now, and it makes sense for Rivers as a place to land on his feet. Despite coming off a down year with Los Angeles in 2019, Rivers is just a season removed from an elite campaign where he led the Chargers to a 12-4 record and the second round of the playoffs.

Indianapolis is clearly hoping that their situation will bring the best out of Rivers, who displayed some very poor decision making in 2019. Rivers will benefit from an improved offensive line, a strong running game, and good outside receivers headlined by T.Y. Hilton.

National Reaction

This is a deal that made too much sense not to happen, and Rivers will get another shot at trying to compete for that elusive Super Bowl ring. Of the three quarterbacks drafted in the great 2004 class, Rivers is the only one without a title to cap off an otherwise stellar career, and that ring could be the difference between him making the Hall of Fame or not.

The Colts also have nothing to lose here since a healthy Rivers is an upgrade over Jacoby Brissett and gives them a chance to compete with the Texans and Titans in the AFC South. It is a low-risk, high-reward move.
