Kansas basketball: 2019-20 season review and 2020-2021 first-look preview
An early look at the 2020-2021 Kansas Jayhawks
Turnover is a frequent part of life in college basketball and Kansas could be hit hard by departures this season. Azubuike and Isaiah Moss are both graduating while Dotson will likely test the NBA Draft waters again, meaning three key pieces of the Kansas rotation could be gone.
Dotson is a lock to get drafted but is likely hovering between a first and second-round pick, which is a huge distinction since only first rounders get guaranteed contracts. There are areas of Dotson’s game he could work on as a junior to try and bolster his stock even further, but there is also an argument to be made that he won’t be able to improve much more on what was a dominant season in college.
Bill Self has been hard at work preparing for these departures, already securing a four-man recruiting class. The headliner is five-star shooting guard Bryce Thompson, who should fit in the rotation right away, while junior college transfer Tyon Grant-Foster is an intriguing prospect as well.
Kansas remains in play for some of the bigger names that have not declared yet, including one of the top guards in the 2020 class, Jalen Green. I am convinced Green and his solid shooting stroke could help the Jayhawks from the perimeter, an area where Kansas was merely average this season.
There is little doubt that Self will put together a team capable of contending for the Big 12 title once again but their national championship upside rides on Dotson’s decision. If Dotson opts to hold off on going pro just one more time Kansas could be the early favorites to cut down the nets in 2021.
