Nick Foles might not be inspiring a ton of confidence in Bears fans, but his former teammate Jalen Mills wants you to remember something.

There’s no doubting the fact that the Chicago Bears need to do something to solve their quarterback problem. At last year’s trade deadline, fans were salivating over rumors that Cam Newton could be on his way to the Windy City to replace Mitchell Trubisky and bring a Super Bowl back to Chicago.

A trade did happen, but it was in the offseason and it was for Nick Foles.

Needless to say, Bears fans were not thrilled. They were even less enthused about the deal when Newton was cut by the Carolina Panthers just days later. All Chicago had to do was wait and the prophecy of Newton would have come true.

But to everyone frustrated with the Bears for seemingly rushing to trade for Foles — a bad contract and a less talented quarterback — Jalen Mills has a fun fact for you. If the goal for Bears fans is to replace Trubisky with a quarterback who can win them a Super Bowl, Foles checks that box.

Mills played with Foles in 2017 when he took the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl, beating the New England Patriots as a backup. It was one of the most incredible football stories to unfold over the last few decades, and Mills would prefer if we didn’t forget that it happened only three years ago.

Of course, this is a narrow way of looking at the Foles-Newton comparisons. Newton is categorically the better quarterback, and has both a longer runway left on his career and a renewed fire in his belly to prove the doubters wrong. Recency bias will lead us to believe that Newton is washed: Ron Rivera chose Kyle Allen over him twice in the last year and many believe that the rash of injuries over the course of his career have eroded what Newton once was.

But Bears fans are justified in longing for Newton over Foles. While it’s an indisputable fact that Foles is a Super Bowl winning quarterback, so to is the fact that outside of Philly he doesn’t have much success to show for. Stints with the Rams and Chiefs ended  with whimpers and he played less than a half of football with the Jaguars before getting injured and losing his job to Gardner Minshew.

It’s truly a beggars-can’t-be-choosers situation for the Bears, though. After a handful of years with Trubisky and hearing endless trolls about passing on Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, fans in Chicago have been backed into such a dark corner that anything other than Trubisky is an upgrade at this point.
