The 2020 NFL schedule will be released by May 9, but could come out sooner depending on a litany of factors. Here’s what you need to know.

The NFL schedule won’t be following its normal script, but you won’t need to wait long.

The league normally releases its 256-game docket a week before the NFL Draft. This year, that would. have put the date around April 16 (with the draft scheduled on April 23rd). However, while COVID-19 has been changing the dynamic of most everything in country, the schedule has been planned to drop this way, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

According to league president Jeff Pash, the schedule can be released as late as Saturday, May 9. However, Pash also said it could come sooner. Smart money says the schedule likely comes out closer to the deadline than sooner, but it gives a solid timetable.

In years past, the league has a team of people dedicated to figuring out the logistics of the schedule. This process takes many different iterations, with slates being disregarded due to abnormally long road trips, stadium conflicts, etc. While the coronavirus is apparently not part of the later release, it still may be making things tough in terms of planning.

Frankly, this elongates interest in the NFL calendar. Normally, the league has the schedule release, the draft and then goes into relative hibernation until training camp in the last 10 days or so of July. With the schedule being dropped in May, there’s another morsel for fans to take in before waiting a few months until camp.
