If Leonard Fournette is expendable, these teams need to call with a trade offer

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be the worst team in football next year. If they are rebuilding, here are five teams they could trade Leonard Fournette to.

Leonard Fournette was once a prized possession in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ backfield. Now, the former No. 4 overall pick out of LSU might be on the trading block. Jacksonville looks to be rebuilding and may very well be the worst team in football next year. General manager David Caldwell has made several trades the last few months and he may not be done dealing guys.

The Jaguars have already parted ways with cornerback Jalen Ramsey, cornerback A.J. Bouye, defensive end Calais Campbell and quarterback Nick Foles within the last few months. Though they have a few other worthy assets at their disposal, this might be the time to see what they can get for a bell-cow back like Fournette on the trade market.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jags have indeed discussed trading Fournette with a few teams, and it’s a situation that bears watching leading up to the draft.

In three years with the Jaguars, Fournette has rushed for 2,631 yards on a frightening number of carries at 666 for 17 touchdowns in 36 career games. Fournette has rushed for over 1,000 yards twice and has amassed 134 catches for 1,009 yards and two additional trips to pay dirt out of the Jaguars backfield.

At only 25 years old and still on his rookie contract, this could be quite the pickup for a team in need of some help in the backfield. Though it’s not an overly robust trade market, let’s look at five potential trade partners the Jaguars could have for a star player like Fournette. Here are the five best landing spots for him in a trade should Caldwell strike up yet another deal.

These aren’t the New England Patriots from yesterday. Now that Tom Brady is out of the building, we should expect New England to no longer be a team that goes 12-4 and wins the AFC East annually. They will regress this year, but how far does head coach/de facto general manager Bill Belichick want the bottom to fall out?

If he’s set on going with former Auburn Tigers star Jarrett Stidham at quarterback, let’s get him another former SEC star to put in the backfield with him. Though the Patriots used a first-round pick on Sony Michel, he could go the Jaguars’ way in a rare player-for-player deal in the NFL these days. Or the Patriots can go all-in on pounding the rock and try to win with elite defense next year.

While Fournette has been seen as a bona-fide bell-cow throughout his NFL and college career, he actually has had some of his best success playing alongside another talented tailback. Keep in mind Derrius Guice was his college teammate for a bit at LSU. Guice really took off once Fournette went pro in 2017, but they certainly proved you can win a lot of games even in an archaic offense.

Overall, the Jaguars aren’t one of those teams Belichick routinely poaches talent away from, even if Jacksonville isn’t well-run. It may have something to do with Caldwell stemming from the Patriot Way by way of Thomas Dimitroff with the Atlanta Falcons? Regardless, the last time the Patriots landed a former star Jaguars running back, it turned out well with Fred Taylor in the mid-2000s.
