Jose Valverde

From 2007 to 2011, Valverde went to three All-Star games, led the majors in saves three times, and was twice a top-six American League Cy Young Award vote getter.

But the 2012 postseason was the beginning of the end for Valverde.

He allowed nine runs in 2.2 innings. That’s a 30.38 earned run average.

Six of the eight outs were recorded via the strikeout, so I guess that’s good.

The Tigers were hoping it was a fluke, but a 5.59 ERA in the 2013 season proved that to be untrue.

But the Mets said “screw it.” They signed the once dominant reliever to a minor league deal in the offseason. He was ultimately called up, and he actually started his Mets tenure with five shutout appearances. That did not continue.

For the rest of the season, he posted a 7.63 ERA, while his opponents hit .313 off him with a .991 OPS.

His 5.66 ERA that year was the second-worst of his career, following a 5.84 ERA in 2006. His final big league appearance came on May 26, 2014. He blew a 2-1 lead over the Pirates by allowing four earned on four hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.

The Mets released him practically as soon as the game ended.
