1. Trade a third-rounder for Jacoby Brissett

Here’s the move the Patriots really need to make. The minute the Colts decided to pay Philip Rivers big money it effectively announced Brissett’s presence on the trade market. Belichick needs to do what it takes to get his former quarterback back to Foxborough.

Think of Brissett as a younger, more dynamic version of Dalton. He’s not going to light up opposing defenses with his precise passing, but he can keep the New England offense on schedule. Brissett’s best plays happen via play action or outside the pocket. That’s a perfect fit for what the Patriots want to do in 2020.

The Colts will continue to insist they have no interest in trading Brissett until an actual deal is agreed upon. The truth is they don’t want an unhappy signal caller in their locker room. Brissett may be saying the right things in public, but he’s got to be seething in private about his demotion.

If the Patriots dangle a third round pick in front of Indianapolis it should be enough to get a deal done. The Colts value their draft capital and cap space more than almost any other team in the league. This deal would give them a boost in both categories. It would also give the Patriots a starting quarterback who could keep opposing defensive coordinators up at night.
