If your favorite team appears on this list, congratulations, you’re a fan of a perennially overrated college football team.

It happens every year without fail. There’s always a few teams who wind up in the preseason AP Poll for no reason other than the voters are familiar with the name. It’s like when players get voted to All-Star Games or players win Gold Gloves or other awards. They are largely based entirely on reputation and the name brand.

We’re still months out from the release of the official preseason AP Top 25, but there are a ton of way-too-early Top 25 college football rankings, including one from FanSided.

But it’s the same thing every year. These are the perennial paper champions who are the most overrated college football teams in the nation in 2020, 2021, 2022 and probably for many years after that too.

5. Texas Longhorns

Is Texas back? No, they’re not back. It’s not 2005 and Vince Young isn’t walking through that door to save the program. Although, it was fun to rewatch the 2006 Rose Bowl when Young and Texas beat USC in what I think is the greatest college football game ever. But Texas is not back to competing for national championships when they’re the little brother in the Big 12.

Oklahoma runs the Big 12 and when programs like Baylor and TCU are jumping up and having standout seasons every few years while the Longhorns are an average-above-average team, it’s quite frustrating for the fans of the program who expect Big 12 titles every year and playoff berths on the norm.

I liked the hire of head coach Tom Herman and think he’ll be there for a long time, but it’s going to take a long time to get the program to where they’re like Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State on an annual basis.

They’re always viewed as a top-10 team and Kirk Herbstreit picked them to make the playoff last year but the talent on the roster doesn’t line up with that.

Texas is overrated. They’ll be overrated in 2020 where it’ll be quarterback Sam Ehlinger trying to do his best one-man show. The roster isn’t loaded with future NFL players like it was back in the day when they were a lock to get all of the top recruits in the state of Texas.

Herman can recruit well but for now, Texas football is overrated until they win the Big 12.
